DRC / Burundi Refugees / 28-year old Alice seats on a hospital bed in DRC's South Kivu Province with two of
her children aged 2 years and 3 weeks. Her 2-year old son suffers from malaria and
malnutrition.

Alice is one of the nearly 8,000 Burundian refugees who have fled to the DRC over
the past few weeks. She fled while she was already 9-month pregnant and gave birth
to a baby girl just four days after her arrival in the DRC. She walked 24 hours with
her husband and their four children, an entire day and an entire night, to reach DRC
without eating. She says that it was very difficult.

7,661 Burundians refugees have crossed into the DRC over the past few weeks. The new
arrivals are being hosted by local families, but the growing numbers are straining
available support. UNHCR is helping some 500 vulnerable refugees at a transit centre
at Kavimvira and in another centre at Sange. Work is ongoing to identify a site
where all the refugees can be moved, and from where they can have access to
